Angiography

Angiography is a medical imaging technique used to visualize the inside, or lumen, of blood vessels and organs of the body, particularly the arteries, veins, and the heart chambers. The procedure involves the use of a contrast agent (a special dye) and X-ray technology to create detailed images of the blood vessels and identify any abnormalities or blockages. There are different types of angiography procedures, each tailored to specific areas of the body.

  1. Coronary Angiography:
    • Purpose: To visualize the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle.
    • Procedure: A catheter is threaded through blood vessels to the coronary arteries. Contrast dye is injected, and X-ray images are taken to identify any blockages or abnormalities in the coronary arteries.
  2. Peripheral Angiography:
    • Purpose: To examine blood vessels in the legs, arms, pelvis, and other areas outside the heart and brain.
    • Procedure: A catheter is inserted into the blood vessels of the area being examined, and contrast dye is injected to highlight blood vessels. X-ray images are then taken to assess blood flow and detect any blockages or narrowing.
  3. Cerebral Angiography (Cerebral Angiogram):
    • Purpose: To visualize blood vessels in the brain and identify conditions such as aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), or other abnormalities.
    • Procedure: A catheter is threaded through blood vessels to the arteries in the brain, and contrast dye is injected. X-ray images are captured to create a detailed map of the cerebral vasculature.
  4. Pulmonary Angiography:
    • Purpose: To examine blood vessels in the lungs and detect pulmonary embolism or other pulmonary vascular conditions.
    • Procedure: A catheter is advanced into the pulmonary arteries, and contrast dye is injected to visualize blood flow in the lungs. X-ray images help identify any blockages or abnormalities.
  5. Renal Angiography:
    • Purpose: To visualize blood vessels in the kidneys and identify conditions such as renal artery stenosis.
    • Procedure: A catheter is inserted into the renal arteries, and contrast dye is injected. X-ray images are taken to assess blood flow and identify any abnormalities in the renal vasculature.

Angiography is a valuable diagnostic tool that provides detailed information about the structure and function of blood vessels. It helps healthcare professionals plan and guide treatments, such as angioplasty or stent placement to open narrowed or blocked arteries.
